GEO is preparing your website and business data so that AI models find them and retell them correctly in answers. Nobody can guarantee a mention, but the chances grow when the facts are clear and the structure is easy to follow.
How GEO differs from SEO
SEO is the fight for a place in the list of Google and Yandex links. GEO is the fight for a mention in a ready AI answer: a person asks "where can I order…", and the system writes a coherent answer naming a few companies. The foundation is shared: clear facts, structure and markup.
What AI models take from a website
- Clear facts: name, address, phone, hours, services, service area, "from" prices.
- Direct answers to questions. A Q&A block where the first sentence answers to the point.
- schema.org markup. Organization, services, questions and answers, breadcrumbs.
- Consistent data across platforms. The same name, address and phone on the website, 2GIS, maps and social media.
- Real reviews with links to the source.
What llms.txt is
It's a text file in the root of the website that briefly says who you are, what you do and which pages matter most. The idea is to give AI models a summary without the noise. Not every system uses it, so don't treat it as a magic button. When I checked the websites of 14 studios in Almaty and Astana on October 6, 2026, only two of them had an llms.txt file.
How to check what AI models know about you
- Ask ChatGPT, Alice or Gemini: "who does [your service] in [your city]".
- Ask: "tell me about [your company name]".
- Write down the answers and find the mistakes: an old address, someone else's services, or no mention of you at all.
- Fix the sources: website, map listings, social media. Then repeat the check in a few weeks.
AI models answer differently at different times and for different users. One check proves nothing; the trend is what matters.
What not to do
- Don't fake reviews or add hidden text: it hurts both search and trust.
- Don't promise clients "first place in ChatGPT": nobody can guarantee that.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need GEO if I already have SEO?
SEO and GEO overlap but don't replace each other. If your site already has solid facts, markup and structure, part of the work is done. The rest is added on top.
Can I set up GEO myself?
The basics, yes: gather consistent facts, add answers to questions, tidy up your listings. Markup and llms.txt are easier to leave to a specialist.
